Ukrainians Protest as president announces return to work

Ukraine’s embattled president has announced that he is returning to work on Monday after four days’ sick leave.

It came as thousands of protesters filled Kiev’s main square – demanding that he give up power.

Opposition leaders, fresh from meeting European US officials at a conference in Munich, told the crowd that they would secure international aid of they were able to take power.

“We have a common understanding with our Western partners about what should be done in Ukraine and how much money it requires,” said Arseniy Yatsenyuk, leader of Ukraine’s opposition Fatherland Party.

“But first of all, the question is who will be executing this plan of change for Ukraine, as no one trusts this regime.”

President Viktor Yanukovych angered opponents when he spurned a trade pact with the EU – turning to Russia for financial support instead.

He has since signed legislation revoking

unpopular new restrictions on protest meetings.But that has failed to appease opponents – who are demanding the release of dozens of people arrested in recent weeks. - (Euronews)

Moscow school shooting: Policeman, teacher killed, hostages set free

Moscow police have confirmed that a policeman and a teacher were killed as a young man with a rifle took children hostages at a city school. The gunman, who is reportedly a high school student, has been detained, police said.

According to Lifenews, the gunman, Sergey Gordeev, was a straight-A student who had a conflict with the school’s 29-year-old geography teacher, Andrey Kirillov.

"I need the geography teacher," Sergey said, threatening the security guard with a rifle and a hunting gun.

"He shot the teacher in the stomach, checked whether he was alive, and then carried out a control shot to his head," the student's classmate told Lifenews.

The security guard managed to call the police.

When they arrived, he showed the officers to the classroom, and the high school student opened fire at them, killing an officer and wounding another one, Kommersant newspaper reported.

The gunman took hostage over 20 teenagers aged 15, releasing most of them soon afterward, according to police.

Kommersant FM reported that the incident was caused by a conflict between the student and the geography teacher. The student was due to graduate with honors, but reportedly thought that the teacher had tried to interfere with his graduation.

All schools in Moscow are now set to be checked for security, and additional measures will be taken to ensure safety in schools, Moscow Mayor Sergey Sobyanin said.

According to Article 317 of the Russian Criminal Code, endangering the life of a law enforcement officer is punishable by 12 to 20 years in prison.

Brazil film director, Eduardo Coutinho stabbed to death

The acclaimed Brazilian film director Eduardo Coutinho has been stabbed to death at his home in Rio de Janeiro.

Police say they believe the 80-year-old film maker was killed by his son, who then allegedly attacked his mother, before injuring himself.

Both are being treated in hospital.

Eduardo Coutinho was considered one of Brazil's greatest documentary directors and had recently been invited into the US Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.

Among his best known films are Edificio Master, Twenty Years Later, Babilonia 2000 and Playing.

Brazilian media reports say the 41-year-old Daniel Coutinho suffers from mental health problems.

'Liberation'

In a press conference, a police investigator said the director's son knocked on a neighbour's door after the attack saying he had "liberated his father".

"He committed these atrocities and knocked on the neighbour's door, not making sense, not saying the right words," Rivaldo Barbosa, the director of Rio's police homicide department, told reporters.

Daniel Coutinho allegedly went back to his parents' flat and waited for the ambulance teams to arrive.

Mr Coutinho's wife, Maria das Dores, survived because she managed to lock herself in the bathroom after being stabbed several times, Mr Barbosa said.

With a career spanning over four decades and more than 20 films, Eduardo Coutinho had Brazil's most prestigious cinema award.

His work provided a candid insight into the lives of regular Brazilians.

He is said to have been planning to shoot a new documentary on the 2013 protests against corruption, football World Cup spending and poor public services.

Oprah Winfrey low-key 60th birthday

(Reuters) - Fifty came with a televised bash, celebrity friends and a black-tie dinner, but Oprah Winfrey will have a low-key 60th birthday at home in California on Wednesday.

The billionaire media entrepreneur will have a "quiet dinner" in the seaside town of Montecito, 90 miles northwest of Los Angeles, says a source familiar with her plans.

Winfrey had previously said she would have "the biggest blowout party I can dream of," but scaled back the affair after the guest list grew too large, the source said.

Instead, last week she and her friends in West Hollywood attended a birthday SoulCycle spin class, an indoor stationary cycling exercise with motivational coaching. Winfrey posted a video online after the class with a group of people wearing navy blue T-shirts with "Happy Birthday Oprah" on the front.

A self-made woman, she rose from poverty as an African American born to a teenage mother in rural Mississippi to become one of the world's most powerful celebrities, with an estimated net worth of $2.9 billion, according to Forbes magazine.

She runs her own cable TV channel, the Oprah Winfrey Network, in partnership with Discovery Communications Inc.

Winfrey's popular daytime talk show ended in 2011, and her trademark interviews were a must for public figures looking to remake their images.

Islamic scholar, Albani, shot dead in Zaria

Sheik Muhammad Albani, a prominent Islamic scholar in Zaria, Kaduna State, was on Saturday night, shot dead,alongside his wife and son.

The News Agency of Nigeria reports that Albani died at the age of 54 according to his family.

Relations, friends and Muslim faithful, were busy preparing for the cleric’s funeral, slated for 10 a.m. Sunday when NAN correspondent visited his residence.

One of the relations, Malam Muhammad Usman, who spoke on behalf of the deceased’s family, confirmed that Albani was attacked on his way home after leaving the venue of his daily Islamic class, “Daril Hadith” at Tudun Wada area of Zaria at about 10:30 p.m.

Usman said the gunmen’s identity could not be ascertained as the attack was carried out late in the night, with no witnesses to the incident.

However, all efforts to get official confirmation from the police proved abortive and they are yet to issue any statement on the incident.

The Killing of Family of Seven in a Kaduna Village

Armed men suspected to be Fulani herdsmen have killed a family of seven during an early morning attack in Ungwar Kajit village of Manchok in Kaura Local Government of Kaduna State, North-West Nigeria.

Indigenes of the community said that the gunmen stormed the area and began their operation around 1am on Friday morning, killing a family of seven.

Armed Policemen and soldiers stationed in the area arrived at the scene hours later, but the killers had escaped before their arrival.

Angry youths from the community were said to have protested the continuous attacks on them by gun men when the Kaduna State Governor, Alhaji Mukhtar Yero visited the area to commiserate with them over the incident.

The angry youths were reported to have booed the governor and pelted his convoy with stones, accusing him of failing to adopt security measures to check the attacks.

But the governor’s Director General on Media and Publicity, Ahmed Maiyaki, in a telephone interview with THISDAY denied that the governor’s convoy was pelted with stones , saying that although the people were angry, they did not throw stones or booed at  the governor.

“It is true that we went in a condition that was tense. Women and youths were protesting, carrying leaves, but no one threw a stone at our convoy”, Maiyaki said.

The rampaging gunmen were said to have killed Mr. Sunday Abin, 47 and his tongue was removed, while his wife and their five children were said to have been mutilated with machetes.

Several people were said to have sustained injuries from gunshots, while many houses and food stuffs were reportedly set ablaze.

The Kaduna State Police Commissioner, Mr Olufunke Adenaike and the spokesman of the State Police Command, DSP, Aminu Lawan, could not be reached on phone to confirm the incident.

However, Maiyaki, in a statement said Governor Yero visited the scene of the incident in Ungwar  Kajit, near Manchok.

The statement said the governor condemned the attack and prayed that God should expose the perpetrators.

"We pray that God should expose the people that are causing this problem. We pray that God should touch their hearts to stop such dastardly acts or destroy their evil machinations."

"We are going to look at ways of dealing with this situation, because this community is porous and we must find way to improve security" the statement reported Yero as saying.
