George Zimmerman challenges Kanye West in a boxing match

Thousands have expressed interest in fighting George Zimmerman in a celebrity boxing match, but Zimmerman recently announced who he would like to fight: Kanye West.

Promoters for the boxing match, scheduled to take place March 1, told TMZ that Zimmerman thinks Kanye attacks "defenseless people," citing run-ins with paparazzi and most recently an 18-year-old man at a chiropractor's office.

The teen in that case settled out of court, according to CBS Los Angeles.

Kanye hasn't made any sort of comment about the boxing match.

Late last month, CNN was told more than 8,000 people had inquired about fighting Zimmerman in the boxing match, but no official opponent has been chosen.

The Senate: Letter of defection

High tension engulfed the Senate over the planned defection of 11 senators elected on the platform of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Tension had mounted between the defecting senators and the Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu, on Thursday last week, following the failure of the Senate number two man to read the letter of defection at the sitting on Thursday.

Ekweremadu had insisted that he did not have the said letter which was submitted to the Senate President David Mark, on Wednesday.

A meeting of the defecting senators and Mark was scheduled for Monday evening, when issues relating to the defection would be sorted out.

Sources, however, told the Nigerian Tribune that the defecting senators and APC caucus in the Senate were already tensed up over the indication that Mark may not read the defection letter.

“Expect a charged atmosphere in the Senate on Tuesday (today). We expect nothing other than Mark reading the letter of defection,” a lawmaker of the APC said.

There were indications, however, that Mark would not read the letter jointly signed by the 11 senators.

Last Wednesday, Senator Bukola Saraki and 10 others had signed a letter of defection from PDP to APC.

It was already confirmed that one of those that signed the letter, Senator Umaru Dahiru, had immediately raised issues and advised Mark not to read the letter last Wednesday.

Senator Dahiru, whose name appeared on the defection list, had stepped up to the Senate President in the chamber last Thursday and told him not to mention his name among the defectors.

Besides, the Senate leadership had indicated that there could not be group defection, as every senator was supposed to come by way of personal explanation contained in Order 43 of the Senate standing rules.

Again, a source said the Senate President was of the view that the planned defection had been caught in the web of order 53(5) of the Senate standing orders, which advised that the Senate may not mention an issue already before the courts if the Senate President believed that such a mention would jeopardise the suit.

The concerned senators had joined their House of Representatives counterparts to file a suit stopping the Senate from declaring their seats vacant.

Sources said the Senate session of today could become rowdy, as the opposition lawmakers and their PDP counterparts were already warming up for a showdown.

Ukrainians Protest as president announces return to work

Ukraine’s embattled president has announced that he is returning to work on Monday after four days’ sick leave.

It came as thousands of protesters filled Kiev’s main square – demanding that he give up power.

Opposition leaders, fresh from meeting European US officials at a conference in Munich, told the crowd that they would secure international aid of they were able to take power.

“We have a common understanding with our Western partners about what should be done in Ukraine and how much money it requires,” said Arseniy Yatsenyuk, leader of Ukraine’s opposition Fatherland Party.

“But first of all, the question is who will be executing this plan of change for Ukraine, as no one trusts this regime.”

President Viktor Yanukovych angered opponents when he spurned a trade pact with the EU – turning to Russia for financial support instead.

He has since signed legislation revoking

Moscow school shooting: Policeman, teacher killed, hostages set free

29-year-old geography teacher, Andrey Kirillov

Moscow police have confirmed that a policeman and a teacher were killed as a young man with a rifle took children hostages at a city school. The gunman, who is reportedly a high school student, has been detained, police said.

According to Lifenews, the gunman, Sergey Gordeev, was a straight-A student who had a conflict with the school’s 29-year-old geography teacher, Andrey Kirillov.

"I need the geography teacher," Sergey said, threatening the security guard with a rifle and a hunting gun.

"He shot the teacher in the stomach, checked whether he was alive, and then carried out a control shot to his head," the student's classmate told Lifenews.

The security guard managed to call the police.

When they arrived, he showed the officers to the classroom, and the high school student opened fire at them, killing an officer and wounding another one, Kommersant newspaper reported.

The gunman took hostage over 20 teenagers aged 15, releasing most of them soon afterward, according to police.

Kommersant FM reported that the incident was caused by a conflict between the student and the geography teacher. The student was due to graduate with honors, but reportedly thought that the teacher had tried to interfere with his graduation.

All schools in Moscow are now set to be checked for security, and additional measures will be taken to ensure safety in schools, Moscow Mayor Sergey Sobyanin said.

According to Article 317 of the Russian Criminal Code, endangering the life of a law enforcement officer is punishable by 12 to 20 years in prison.

Brazil film director, Eduardo Coutinho stabbed to death

The acclaimed Brazilian film director Eduardo Coutinho has been stabbed to death at his home in Rio de Janeiro.

Police say they believe the 80-year-old film maker was killed by his son, who then allegedly attacked his mother, before injuring himself.

Both are being treated in hospital.

Eduardo Coutinho was considered one of Brazil's greatest documentary directors and had recently been invited into the US Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.

Among his best known films are Edificio Master, Twenty Years Later, Babilonia 2000 and Playing.

Brazilian media reports say the 41-year-old Daniel Coutinho suffers from mental health problems.

'Liberation'

In a press conference, a police investigator said the director's son knocked on a neighbour's door after the attack saying he had "liberated his father".

"He committed these atrocities and knocked on the neighbour's door, not making sense, not saying the right words," Rivaldo Barbosa, the director of Rio's police homicide department, told reporters.

Daniel Coutinho allegedly went back to his parents' flat and waited for the ambulance teams to arrive.

Mr Coutinho's wife, Maria das Dores, survived because she managed to lock herself in the bathroom after being stabbed several times, Mr Barbosa said.

With a career spanning over four decades and more than 20 films, Eduardo Coutinho had Brazil's most prestigious cinema award.

His work provided a candid insight into the lives of regular Brazilians.

He is said to have been planning to shoot a new documentary on the 2013 protests against corruption, football World Cup spending and poor public services.
