The Federal Government on Thursday gave the Academic Staff Union of
Universities, ASUU, one week ultimatum to call off the ongoing strike.
The government has also asked ASUU to advertise vacancies of striking lecturers if they
refuse to return to classroom by next week.
ASUU has been on a nationwide strike since July 1, demanding the implantation of 2009 agreement it had with the government.
The meeting held last week by ASSU NEC, the lecturers
resolved to take a definite position on the government’s offer and the strike
after meeting President Goodluck Jonathan this week, but the meeting never
held. It appears ASSU is demanding much more than the federal government can offer this time.
