Dickson, Governor of Bayelsa State
More than 400 persons of northern extraction have been
arrested by the Nigerian Immigration Service (NIS) in Yenegoa, capital of
Bayelsa state, the BBC Hausa service reported yesterday.
The arrest, which was made on Monday, was said to have
affected people from Kano, Sokoto and Jigawa states.
Spokesman of the Immigration service in the state Bayelsa
Chukwuemeka Obua while confirming the arrest said already 100 people out of the
arrested people have been released after preliminary investigation, as they
were found to be possessing duly recognised documents.
One of the people, who escaped the arrest, Rabi’u Bayelsa
told BBC Hausa that most of the people arrested were small-scale business men,
who have spent long time in the state.
“They told us that the reason for the arrest was just a
directive from the top, that they were given a directive to spend a month for
the operation,” he said.
Rabi’u Bayelsa further explained that “they are not
strangers, in fact, the people are indigenes of Kano, Sokoto and Jigawa, who
have been in the trade of shoe shining, water vending and wrist watch selling
for a long time in the state.”
He added that the Monday incident was the second time
authorities were making the arrest in recent times.
“Last time after the arrest, a delegation from Kano had to
come here and confirmed that we were not Boko Haram members,” he said.
