Union meets this week to review strike
The stage for the suspension of the five-month-old strike by
the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) was set Wednesday as the union
and the federal government finally reached a compromise with the signing of a
Memorandum of Understanding (MoU).
The union had made the signing of the MoU, which will detail the agreement it
reached with President Goodluck Jonathan at a marathon meeting on November 4, a
precondition for it to suspend the strike.
The MoU was signed at the conference room of the Ministry of
Education in Abuja by the ASUU President, Dr. Nasir Fagge and the Permanent Secretary,
Ministry of Education, Dr. MacJohn Nwaobiala. President, Nigeria
Labour Congress (NLC), Abdulwahed Omar, witnessed the occasion.
At a press conference jointly addressed by the supervising
Minister of Education, Chief Nyesom Wike and Fagge, Wike said all contending
issues between both parties had been resolved to the satisfaction of all
parties.
