Boko Haram vs Nigerian Army, the battle line is drawn

The dreaded Boko Haram militants have staged deadly attacks yesterday 2 December 3, 2013 in Maiduguri, the northeastern Nigerian city, prompting military authorities on Monday to impose a total ban on movement. The ban also affected flights as no air traffic is allowed in or out of conflict Borno State.

An AFP correspondent said the wave of violence began around 3:00 am (0200 GMT) and included bomb and gun attacks. The extent of the attacks is unknown with communication bridged by the restrictions imposed by the military authorities.
Sources say one of the attacks was staged near the airport. But he did not confirm whether the air force base was hit, as being believed.

The large attack in a major urban center now cast further doubt on the military claims that the Islamist insurgents have been pushed into remote, more rural parts of the northeast.

The military on Saturday said they would tighten security in communities near Nigeria’s northern and eastern borders so as to safe-guard Christmas and New Year period due to fear of Boko Haram strikes.

With Boko Haram founded in Maiduguri over 10 years ago and recent attacks, is the Nigerian Army winning the fight in counterterrorism?
